Luau Birthday

Another year old calls for another fun party! My 6 year old requested a luau this time around. We schemed up some fun games, great food and other party-tastic shenanigans.

Food:

Hawaiian Rolls, unpleasantly named Funeral Rolls
Coconut Shrimp
Fruit - Pineapple, Mango, Watermelon
Hawaiian meatballs

Cupcakes - we made little beach scenes with the following.

 White frosting
 Blue frosting
Cocktail Umbrellas
Teddy Grahams
Rainbow Belts (for beach towels)

Be sure to add the candies the DAY OF the party, otherwise they get wonky and stale.

Games:

Limbo, Hula hoop &  Corn hole competitions

Mannequin Lei tossing game - We happen to have a dress form that needed to participate in the party. We threw a hawaiin shirt on him and had the kids try to throw party leis on it from different distances.

Other activities :
Tour of the tropics - We have a great nature trail that we turned into a wild tropic ride on our golfcart. We picked up some pink flamingos and some tropical blow ups!

Piñata - We love making piñatas for birthdays!

To do so, we boil water and then stir in equal parts flour. Let that cool down. In the meantime, shred old newspaper and blow up a balloon. Once paste is cooled, slather the shredded paper in the paste one at a time, and slap that on the balloon. Do at least 2-3 layers, drying between layers. Once it is hard, you can make an opening for the candy/toys to go in and take out the balloon. Now you can paint or decorate your piñata w/ tissue paper

Decorations:
Palm Trees:  We got crafty and used pool noodles covered in packing paper and painted paper bags for the palm leaves.
Fabric We decorated tables with tropical print fabric. These come out for every tropical gathering. Amazon has a lot of great options by the yard.
Backdrop  I love a backdrop behind the main party table. The one we found was full of pink flamingos on a beach!

Wheels on the Bus Party

My two year is obsessed with school buses. This love was amplified after attending a local bus demolition derby. (He now believes all school buses bang into each other, stating "bus, BANG!", with coordinating hand gestures indicating a collision. We'll have to retrain his psyche but I digress...) This year we hosted his bus themed party at the local library. I saw other libraries have birthday packages including story time; ours only offers a large space for a small fee. But, hey, I can play librarian story-time reader for a party! (Note the below contains some affiliated links, some FREEBIES, and other direct links to tools or service sites. On pixlr.com, I photo-shopped a picture of my son and added him to the bus on the invite. I was going to print at home but the quality was medioc...

Cruise Ship Lego Kits

Dusted off this old blog to share something fun! Here’s the full parts list, instructions, and templates for the LEGO kits we put together as Fish Extender gifts on our Disney Cruise. I know lots of people have made versions of these before, but when I went to create ours, I couldn’t find a clear parts list or ready-to-go templates anywhere—so I made my own! Hopefully, this makes it easier for anyone else looking to do the same. Cruise Ship Instructions

Turkey Boxes for Silhouette Cameo

My son wanted to have a fun craft for after school yesterday. I thought what better than a Thanksgiving related craft! I looked online for some ideas, then ended up creating my own turkey box. They just needed googly eyes to make them complete. 👀 I used basic construction paper for these gobblers. Next time I'd use cardstock or something that would hold up better for at least the box. Here is the link to the Silhouette file for FREE:  Turkey Box Cheap googly eyes: Eyes To cut out each colored piece in Silhouette: Select the same colored images (hold down ctrl, then click on each of the same colored images) Open a new workbook and paste them in Cut out the image Rinse and repeat for the other colors!
